Our Work
DESPRI has focused most of its programs in the Northwest of Haiti’s Artibonite department, while also having long-term programs and teams in the South and Central/Northeast Departments. L'Artibonite is derived from the Taino word Ja'tibonicu' meaning The Great High Place of the Sacred Waters. Communities in this region face multiple challenges: political instability; environmental degradation caused by natural disasters and deforestation for livelihood; and lack of access to quality education, economic opportunity, and healthcare. With transformative innovations, local people can address these long-standing structural challenges and build vibrant local economies and thriving communities.
We believe that multi-dimensional, community-led approaches to poverty alleviation have the best long-term results. With transformative innovations, local people can address these long-standing structural challenges and build vibrant local economies and thriving communities.
All our programs are built on Self-Help Group (SHG) participatory methodology. Throughout every phase of the development process we integrate the principles and building blocks of local empowerment, self-reliance, mutual support, accountability, autonomy, and capacity building
